# Laptop specs explained: CPU, RAM, SSD and graphics

By The OneTech Computers team. Published 2026-10-11; updated 2026-10-11.

**Short answer:** The processor sets overall speed, RAM decides how many things you can do at once, the SSD decides how fast everything opens, and a graphics card only matters for design, video, 3D or games. For most people, a recent mid-range processor, 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD is the sweet spot.

## Key facts

| Fact | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Processor | Generation matters more than i5 vs i7 |
| RAM | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended |
| Storage | SSD only; NVMe SSDs are the fastest |
| Graphics | Integrated is fine unless you edit video, design in 3D or game |

## Processor (CPU)

Intel Core i3/i5/i7 and AMD Ryzen 3/5/7 are tiers. The number after them tells you the generation: in "Core i5-1135G7" the 11 means 11th generation. A newer i5 is often faster and more efficient than an older i7, so compare generations first.

U-series chips are built for battery life; H-series chips are built for performance and use more power.

## Memory (RAM)

- 8 GB: documents, browsing, video calls.
- 16 GB: heavy multitasking, programming, light design.
- 32 GB: video editing, large datasets, virtual machines.

Some laptops let you add RAM later; others have it soldered. If it can't be upgraded, buy what you'll need in three years.

## Storage (SSD vs HDD)

A solid-state drive (SSD) is many times faster than a hard drive (HDD) and is what makes a laptop feel quick. 256 GB fills up fast once updates and apps are installed; 512 GB is the safer choice.

## Graphics (GPU) and screen

Integrated graphics handle everyday work and video. A dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce or RTX, AMD Radeon) matters for gaming, 3D, CAD and video editing. Full HD (1920×1080) is the standard to look for; an IPS panel gives better colours and viewing angles.
